What are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are the latest advancements in dentistry to replace missing or broken-down teeth. If you are missing a tooth or a tooth has decayed past the point where it can be saved and requires removal, a dental implant may be a good treatment option for you.

A tooth implant serves as a synthetic “root” and consists of a titanium post that is placed in your jaw, a second piece called an “abutment” that screws into the implant and provides a base for the new tooth, and finally a porcelain crown that is placed on top of the abutment and looks and feels like your natural tooth.

Uses of Dental Implants

The most common way to use an implant is to replace an individual missing tooth. Implants can also be used to anchor a bridge that will replace multiple teeth, as well as support dentures so that they are held firmly in place and won’t slip or move around when you talk or chew. One of the latest advances in teeth implants allows a dentist to place four implants and immediately secure a set of teeth in place, all in a single visit. This special procedure is called All-On-4®.

Advantages of Dental Implants

  • Natural. An implant that is properly placed will fuse to the bone and make itself a natural part of your jaw. It isn’t removable, and you can care for it just as you would normally care for your natural teeth.
  • Superior function. Implants or implant-supported dentures will allow you to chew normally, while removable dentures will only allow you to put 5% or 10% of the amount of pressure on them that you might normally use when you eat.
  • Long-lasting. With a documented success rate of over 97%, dental implants will last you for many, many years, far beyond the lifespan of a bridge or denture.
  • Preserves your other teeth. You don’t need to cut down adjacent teeth, which is a necessity in making a bridge. Your remaining teeth can stay healthy and complete.

Our Dental Implant Procedure Performed Entirely in our Comfortable Office:

Step 1: Evaluation

In your evaluation, the doctor will make sure that he collects all of the information that he needs to help you decide on the correct treatment plan.

Dr. Gray or Dr. Soon will meet with you and evaluate your teeth and bone structure to determine the type of treatment that will be best for you. In addition to a complete physical examination of your mouth, the doctor will take panoramic digital X-rays and photographs using our intraoral camera, in order to fully evaluate your bone depth and health. In order to determine your candidacy for implant surgery, the doctor will want to take a complete medical history as well.

Step 2: Treatment Plan

Next, the doctor will discuss your treatment options with you and put together a treatment plan that will help you to restore your mouth to full health and function. He will take into account your budget and your preferences, and make sure that your plan is exactly the right one for you.

The doctor will explain to you what to expect. He will show you, using computer imaging or a model, exactly what changes you will have in your teeth, and how your smile will change with the use of the implants.

Step 3: Implant surgery

The doctor may use a special computer system to carefully plan your implant surgery.

Our computer-design system can then be used to fully plan and implement your implant surgery. With the help of our board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Chang, the doctor will place the titanium implant posts in your jaw.

If you have insufficient bone left in your jaw to support an implant, the doctor may recommend and perform a bone graft from another location in order to prepare your jaw for the stress of the implant post. Dr. Gray and Dr. Soon are very experienced in bone grafting procedures.

Step 4: Crown or denture placement

While you are healing from your surgery, your new tooth or teeth are being crafted according to the doctor’s specifications. Your replacement crown or denture will be made from the highest-quality materials and crafted to look and feel like your natural teeth.

Are you a candidate for dental implants?

As technology progresses, more and more people are candidates for dental implants. Dr. Gray and Dr. Soon stay at the forefront of this technology and are familiar with the latest techniques so that they can help as many people as possible to get the implants that they need.

A good candidate for a dental implant is someone who is in good general and oral health. You must have enough bone in your jaw to support the implant, and sometimes if a tooth has been missing for a while the bone must first be rebuilt using special bone grafting surgical procedures.

People who wear partial or full dentures can replace these with dental implants, or use implants to stabilize and secure the denture, making them much more comfortable.

The best way to find out if you are a candidate for dental implants is to come in for a no-charge initial consultation.
