Preoperative IV Sedation Instructions

  1. DO NOT eat or drink after midnight on the night before the appointment. If the procedure is to be performed in the afternoon, the patient should have nothing to eat or drink for at least 6 hours prior to the appointment. This includes gum, mints, and candy. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IS TO ENTER YOUR MOUTH EXCEPT AIR AND YOUR MEDICATIONS WITH A FEW SIPS OF WATER FOR 6 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR SCHEDULED PROCEDURE, OTHERWISE YOU CANNOT BE SEDATED.
  2. Any medications that are normally taken should be taken with a sip of water, unless otherwise instructed by the doctor.
  3. Bring your medications (or an accurate list) with you on the day of your procedure. If you take inhalers for asthma/COPD/other reasons, please bring them with you the day of your procedure.
  4. A responsible adult must accompany you/the patient and remain in the waiting room for the entire time of the planned procedure. The procedure will not begin until the escort is in the waiting room. This person must be able to drive since you/the patient will not be able to drive for at least 24 hours after the sedation.
  5. Loose clothes should be worn.
  6. Contacts should not be worn the day of the planned procedure.
  7. Anesthetic can not be administered if you have a severe cold, sore throat, or sinus infection with excessive drainage. If you develop any of these problems prior to your appointment, please call the office so that we can reschedule your appointment.
  8. No make-up, earrings, or any jewelry (including body jewelry). Please remove fingernail polish.
  9. While taking antibiotics, birth control pills may become ineffective. Extra precautions should be taken while you are on antibiotics.
  10. Be here 15 minutes prior to your appointment time. If you are late, or do not have an attendant, your appointment must be rescheduled.
  11. Please call the office to reschedule or cancel your appointment. Please give 48 hours notice for cancellations.
