IV Sedation Dentistry
A relaxing alternative is available if you are afraid of the dentist
At Luma Dentistry, we are very experienced in dealing with patients who are fearful of dental treatment. Even if you have experienced uncomfortable or painful dental treatment in the past, we can use IV Sedation Dentistry to help you relax and comfortably obtain the treatment that you need.
With IV Sedation Dentistry, you will relax as if you are sleeping and be comfortable throughout your treatment.
Board Certified Anesthesiologists to help you to relax
At Luma Dentistry, we are lucky to have two Board Certified Anesthesiologists — Dr. Nitin Chhabra and Dr. Daniel Chang.
Over the last year, we have worked to provide a comfortable, pleasant, pain-free, and safe dental experience for our patients by utilizing IV sedation. By having such a unique working experience and collaboration, we are able to treat patients in the office setting, rather than sending them to a hospital or outpatient surgery center.
How Does IV Sedation Work?
IV sedation is the most preferred and predictable method of sedation when deep sedation is desired and requires specialized training and certification to be able to administer. With IV sedation, medications are administered directly into the bloodstream. They take effect almost immediately. Because you are constantly monitored throughout your treatment, the doctor can easily add more medication if it is needed.
Before the doctors begin, they will answer any questions you may have. You will be maintained in a comfortable, painless, extremely relaxed yet conscious state while our doctors work on your teeth.
The IV contains an anti-anxiety medication and is adjusted so that you are awake just enough to follow directions. Your vital signs (breathing, heart rate, etc.) are monitored the entire time you are under. When you wake up after the work is done, you are a little “dazed” and remember nothing. When you are fully awake, you will need someone to assist you to the vehicle and drive you home.
Who is a candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
IV sedation dentistry is not designed for everyone, but it can be an excellent solution for adults who:
- have high levels of fear
- have had traumatic dental experiences
- have difficulty getting numb
- have a bad gag reflex
- have very sensitive teeth
- have limited time to complete their dental care
- have complex dental problems
- hate needles and shots
- hate noises, smells, and tastes associated with dental care
- are afraid and embarrassed about their teeth
Our operating room includes state-of-the-art heart monitoring and emergency equipment. Pulse oximetry, BP, and continuous EKG monitoring are routinely utilized to ensure your safety.
