Dr. Huggins was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. He attended Auburn University, graduating with honors in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. He went on to earn his dental degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, in 1980.
After graduation, Dr Huggins began his private practice in eastern Birmingham, in the Woodlawn area, while also working part-time at the UAB School of Dentistry as a clinical instructor in the Prosthetic Dentistry Department. In 1991 he moved his dental practice to the Montevallo Road area and has worked there for the past 30 years.
General and Family dentistry has allowed Dr. Huggins to experience and perfect his skills in many different facets of dentistry. One of the biggest joys of his years in practice has been the long term relationships that he has developed with so many of his patients. Many have become dear friends, as he has seen their families grow and their children and grandchildren grow up. It is not unusual for him to have as many as four generations of patients from one family. He considers it a treasured blessing to have been able to serve his patients for over 40 years.
In 1996, Dr. Huggins began a journey of participating in international faith based Medical/Dental mission trips with his church, Brookwood Baptist. He has also had the honor of participating and serving with teams from Tennessee and Texas. These experiences have been a highlight of his career. His thirty plus trips to Central and South America have taken him to Venezuela, Peru, Honduras, Nicaragua and Brazil. While each location has its own unique set of challenges and needs, the common goal has always been to serve others in the name of Christ and to use God given abilities and resources to aid those who do not have access to dental ca`re.
In 2017, Dr. Huggins was licensed to practice dentistry in the state of Tennessee enabling him to participate in numerous dental mission trips to the eastern border of Tennessee to provide dental care to the underserved people of the Appalachian Mountains.
Outside of work, Dr. Huggins enjoys boating and relaxing at the lake, where in his younger years he was an avid and skilled skier. He is also a skilled and self taught “handyman” having gained much of his knowledge through working on numerous job sites as an adolescent and teenager with his Dad, who owned a local plastering company.
Dr. Huggins and his wife, Cindy, have two children and three grandsons who all live in the Birmingham area. He considers one of life’s biggest blessings to be time spent with family. He says “You never know where a blessing might come from, but you always know WHO it comes from. Life is not always easy, but every day is a gift and an opportunity to make a difference.”
